A Peasant Trip into Edinburgh

Here it is Friday.......as we approach another weekend, this time in Edinburgh.  The day started with bright sunshine and lots of early activity on the Muirfield Golf Course.  We heard from discussions at dinner that Friday's are reserved for club members only, so the visiting American golf aficionados would have to go elsewhere to play today!

Breakfast was amazing.  Andrea was a bit more cautious and had poached eggs on toast with cream and chives, while I went 'whole hog' for the full Scottish breakfast.  The challenge here was the black pudding (blood pudding) and haggis. Haggis, the national dish of Scotland, is a type of pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep, minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep's stomach and boiled. This could not sound more disgusting, but it was actually quite mild and agreeable for breakfast. Lots of fun and chuckling!

After breakfast we took another long walk through the gardens.  They are truly beautiful.  We had to leave around 11:00 as we had reservations for a tour through the Royal Yacht Britannia.  Amazingly, this is boasted as being the top tourist attraction in Scotland! Andrea made reservations months ago.

Along the way up to the yacht tour we stopped for a walk at Aberlady Bay.  We had seen this boardwalk on our drive to Greywalls yesterday and thought it was worth a visit on the return trip.

The visit to the Britannia was a lot of fun and quite educational.  It probably took us close to two hours to wander through it with the help of a good audio guide.  We then stayed for lunch in the 'Tea Room" which proved to be delicious and a good place to rest our feet.

Driving into downtown Edinburgh on a Friday afternoon was a bit crazy......but we lucked out and 'landed' at the Balmoral Hotel without incident.  We checked in and said we did not want to see the car until Sunday!  The hotel is in the heart of the City and was what you would expect from a classic resting place with a lot of history.  We ended up getting a very nice upgrade to some kind of executive suite without too much additional charge.  The extra space made it worthwhile.......really a fun experience and another way to celebrate our anniversary!

We fell into our normal rhythm of resting and heading down to the Prince Bar around 7:00 and next door for our dinner at 8:00.  It was great fun......very active and lots of weekend energy!
